Of all the zones in Vastu, the north-east — known as Ishanya and governed by Ishwara — is the most sacred and the most influential. It combines the wealth energy of the north with the vitality of the east, and it is associated with clarity, health, prosperity and spiritual wellbeing. If you correct only one part of your home, this is the one.
The guiding principle for the north-east is to keep it open, clean, light and low. This corner should be the least cluttered and least heavy part of your home.
What to place in the north-east
The north-east is the ideal home for a pooja or prayer space, the main source of natural light, and any underground water source such as a borewell, sump or an underground tank. Light living areas and open foyers also suit this corner.
Keeping this zone lower and lighter than the rest of the home — for example, lower floor levels, larger windows, and minimal furniture — reinforces its beneficial nature.
What to keep out of the north-east
The north-east should never hold a toilet, a kitchen, a staircase, heavy storage, or a cluttered store room. A toilet or kitchen in the north-east is among the defects Vastu treats most seriously, because it places waste or fire energy in the home's most sacred corner.
Also avoid a missing or 'cut' north-east corner in the building's shape. A north-east that is extended slightly is considered beneficial, but one that is cut off weakens the whole home.
Correcting a defective north-east
If a toilet or kitchen sits in your north-east and cannot be moved, remedies focus on cleanliness, containment and the recommended materials and colours for that specific placement. For a cluttered north-east, the fix is simply to clear and light it.
Because the north-east carries so much weight, it is worth confirming exactly what falls in this zone in your specific floor plan — a small correction here often improves the feel of the whole home.

Why is the north-east the most important direction in Vastu?
The north-east (Ishanya) combines the north's wealth energy and the east's vitality, and is the home's most sacred zone. Keeping it open, clean and free of toilets, kitchens and heavy structure is one of the strongest positive steps in Vastu.
What if my home has a cut north-east corner?
A cut north-east weakens the home and is harder to remedy than most defects. Options include using the outdoor space to visually 'complete' the corner, keeping the area light, and applying specific remedies. A full analysis can assess how serious it is for your layout.
