Kitchen Vastu Direction

The kitchen represents the fire element (Agni), and the direction that governs fire is the south-east (Agneya) — which is why the south-east corner is the ideal location for a kitchen in Vastu. When the kitchen sits in the south-east and the cook faces east while cooking, the fire element is perfectly aligned, supporting health, energy and prosperity in the home.

If a south-east kitchen is not possible, the north-west is the accepted second choice. The placements to avoid are the north-east (which clashes sacred water energy with fire) and the south-west (which disturbs the zone of stability). A kitchen in either of those zones is a recognised defect worth remedying.

Within the kitchen, the stove or cooktop is best in the south-east part of the room, with the cook facing east. The sink and any water source should be kept away from the stove — ideally in the north-east of the kitchen — so that fire and water are not placed side by side, which Vastu considers an elemental conflict. A small gap or divider between stove and sink helps where space is tight.

Store heavier items, grains and appliances along the south and west walls. The refrigerator is comfortable in the south-west or south-east of the kitchen. Keep the north-east corner of the kitchen light and clean, and avoid a dark, cluttered cooking space.

Because moving a kitchen is expensive, remedies matter. If the kitchen is in the north-east, remedies focus on shifting the cooking direction, using specific colours and materials, and keeping the space impeccably clean. A north-east kitchen defect, for example, is traditionally softened with muscovite and specific marble placements under the stove.
