Vastu for Flats

In an independent house you control the plot, the slope, the boundary walls and the position of the building itself. In a flat you inherit all of that from the builder — so flat Vastu is less about moving walls and more about how you use the space you already have. The good news is that the majority of Vastu results depend on three things you can still influence: which direction your main door faces, where you place the kitchen stove and cooking activity, and how each bedroom is used. Get those right and a flat can score just as well as a bungalow.

The single most important factor is the direction your flat's main entrance faces, measured from inside the flat looking out. This sets the tone for the whole home. After that, the internal zoning — kitchen towards the south-east, the master bedroom in the south-west, and lighter, more open zones kept towards the north-east — carries most of the remaining weight.

The kitchen is the highest-priority room to get right because it represents the fire element. The ideal cooking position is the south-east corner with the cook facing east. If your builder placed the kitchen in the north-east or south-west, that is a recognised defect, but one that usually has a remedy rather than requiring demolition.

The master bedroom belongs in the south-west, the zone of stability and relationships — heavier furniture and the head of the household are best anchored here. Toilets are best tucked into the west-north-west or south-south-west; a toilet in the north-east zone (the most sacred part of the home) is the defect Vastu treats most seriously in flats, and it is worth checking first. Keep the north-east corner as light, clean and clutter-free as possible, as this zone governs clarity and opportunity.

Before signing, note the facing of the main door, the position of the kitchen, and whether any toilet sits in the north-east. Check the shape of the flat — regular square or rectangular layouts are strongest, while flats with a cut or missing north-east corner are harder to correct. Also look at where the flat sits within the building and which direction the balcony and larger windows open towards, since natural light from the north and east is considered beneficial.

You do not need a perfect flat. Most flats have one or two defects, and the point of a Vastu check is to tell you which defects actually matter and which have simple, practical remedies — so you can make an informed decision rather than walking away from an otherwise good home.
