Vastu for Rented Homes and PGs: What You Can Actually Do

Most Vastu advice assumes you own and control your home. But millions live in rented flats, PGs and hostel rooms where you cannot change the kitchen, move a toilet or touch the structure. The good news is that a surprising amount of Vastu is about how you use a space — which is entirely within a tenant's control.

Every tip below is reversible and leaves no mark on the property, so you can apply them freely and undo them when you leave.

Choose well before you sign

The most powerful thing a tenant can do is check Vastu before renting. When comparing options, note the main door direction, whether any toilet sits in the north-east, and where the kitchen is. Choosing a fundamentally well-oriented flat means fewer defects to work around later.

You don't need a perfect flat — just avoid the serious defects (like a north-east toilet or kitchen) where you have a choice, and pick the better-balanced option among what's available.

Reversible changes that help

Arrange your bed so your head points south or east while sleeping. Keep the north-east corner of your room clean, light and clutter-free. Place a small water element or keep the lightest décor in the north-east, and put heavier items and storage along the south and west.

Face east or north while working or studying. Keep the entrance to your room or flat tidy and welcoming. If you cook, face east where possible. None of this requires permission or leaves a trace.

Working around fixed defects

If your rented kitchen or bathroom is in a less-than-ideal zone, focus on cleanliness, keeping doors closed, using favourable colours through removable furnishings, and good lighting. These soften a defect you cannot physically move.

For PG and hostel residents with just one room, the same core ideas apply at room scale: head south or east for sleep, a light and open north-east, heavier things to the south-west, and a tidy entrance.
