Vastu Myths vs Facts: What's Real and What's Just Fear

Vastu Shastra is a thoughtful design tradition, but a lot of what circulates online is exaggeration or outright fear-mongering — often to push people into expensive fixes. Understanding what Vastu really says helps you make calm, informed decisions instead of anxious ones.

Here are some of the most common myths, and what classical Vastu actually holds.

Myth: A south-facing home is cursed

This is perhaps the most damaging myth. Classical Vastu does not consider south-facing homes bad. A south-facing house can be prosperous when the main door is in an auspicious southern pada and the interior is well zoned. The facing is a headline; the door position and layout are the real story.

The same applies to west-facing and south-west-facing homes, which are frequently underrated. Facing alone never makes a home good or bad.

Myth: One defect will ruin your life

Almost every home has one or two Vastu defects — that is completely normal. A single defect does not doom a household. Vastu works on balance across the whole home, and most defects have practical remedies. The purpose of an analysis is to tell you which defects actually matter and which are minor.

Fear-based advice tends to treat every imperfection as a catastrophe. A balanced view treats defects as things to understand and, where worthwhile, to soften.

Myth: You must demolish and rebuild to fix Vastu

As covered in our remedies guide, structural change is a rare last resort. The vast majority of defects respond to colour, placement, lighting, metals and decluttering. Anyone insisting that you must break walls for every defect is not reflecting mainstream Vastu practice.

What Vastu actually is

At its core, Vastu is about arranging your home so that light, air, heat, water and daily activity are balanced across the space. Stripped of fear, it is a sensible framework that overlaps considerably with good architectural common sense. Used calmly, it is a tool for understanding your home better — not a source of anxiety about it.
