Vastu for Independent Houses

Independent houses give you complete control over Vastu implementation. From plot selection to construction, every step can follow Vastu principles.

Key considerations include plot shape and slope, building placement within the plot, water source location, and the direction of the main entrance. Proper planning ensures a Vastu-compliant home.

From plot to rooftop

An independent house lets you apply Vastu from the ground up. It begins with the plot: regular square or rectangular shapes are ideal, the north-east should be the lowest and most open corner, and the building is best set towards the south and west, leaving the north and east more open. Extended or cut corners in the north-east weaken a plot, while a slight extension of the north-east is considered beneficial.

With full control of the structure, you can align the entrance to an auspicious pada, place the kitchen in the south-east, the pooja room in the north-east, and bedrooms across the south and west — a level of alignment rarely possible in a ready-built flat.

Boundary, entrance and open space

Boundary walls are best kept slightly higher and heavier on the south and west, and a little lower on the north and east. The main gate should align with an auspicious direction for the house's facing. Leave more open yard space towards the north and east, and keep the south-west built up and solid.

Position water thoughtfully: underground tanks, sumps and borewells in the north-east or north, and overhead tanks in the south-west or west. Keep the septic tank away from the north-east, generally towards the north-west or west.

Room placement and levels

Inside, keep the north-east light and sacred, the south-west grounded and private, the kitchen in the south-east, and toilets in the west-north-west or south-south-west. The floor level and roof height are best kept lower in the north-east and higher in the south-west, echoing the open-versus-grounded principle that runs through all Vastu. Checking your plan before construction lets you lock in these strengths at zero cost.
