Vastu for Duplex Apartments

A duplex adds a vertical dimension to Vastu because you are zoning two connected floors rather than one plane. The guiding idea is to keep the more grounded, private and heavier functions lower and towards the south-west, and lighter, more public functions towards the north and east. The master bedroom is best in the south-west — commonly on the upper floor for extra stability — while living, dining and guest areas suit the ground floor's north and east.

The staircase connecting the floors is the defining element of duplex Vastu. It belongs in the south, west or south-west, and should never occupy the north-east or the exact centre of the home. A staircase in the wrong zone is one of the more significant defects in a duplex, so it is worth confirming early.

On the ground floor, keep the kitchen in the south-east, the pooja room in the north-east, and the living and dining areas towards the north and east. Reserve the north-east corner as an open, well-lit space. On the upper floor, place the master bedroom in the south-west, children's rooms in the west or north-west, and keep terraces and open balconies towards the north and east.

Double-height voids and open wells are best kept away from the south-west, which should stay solid and grounded. If your duplex has a central atrium, ensure it does not sit exactly on the brahmasthan with heavy structure around it.

Because a duplex often involves construction or significant renovation, checking the plan before you build is the highest-value step you can take. Staircase position, floor-to-floor zoning and water placement are all much easier to correct on paper than in concrete.
